The Panthers seem to be on a roll and the Falcons seem to be on whatever is opposite of that.  Both teams have some serious fantasy value.

This week, we made some gut calls on Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers Defense, Greg Olsen, Mike Tolbert, DeAngelo Williams and all those pesky wide receivers.

Here is an example of what you can find over at Cover32.com, by Her Fantasy Football:

Gut Calls

Greg Olsen
#11 Ranked TE
He’s the 17th ranked TE this season, but he might be your starter if you’re in a bad bye week situation. He keeps dealing with his foot injury and continues to rock a walking boot, but come Sunday, he plays. The last three weekly point totals are 1.9, 4.7, 8.1. That’s going in the right direction, but he’s still risky.

Fantasy Forecast: Falcons vs. PanthersAtlanta Falcons 2-5 at Carolina Panthers 4-3 ATLANTA FALCONS Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em Gut Calls Bench Warmers CAROLINA PANTHERS Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em Gut Calls Bench Warmers All Wide Receivers The top WR in the game last week was Ted Ginn Jr, and he scored a whopping eight fantasy points.

Play ‘Em If Got ‘Em

Cam Newton
#6 Ranked QB
You have to play him if you drafted him. Hopefully, you don’t get motion sickness because this is going to be a bumpy ride. Up and down and up and down. It is what it is, but you can’t have him scoring 30 fantasy points on your bench. Last week he was fabulous (242 passing yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 30 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD) and the week before he was dreadful (308 passing yards, 0 TDs, 3 INTs, 25 rushing yards). Sorry, them’s the breaks.

Fantasy Forecast: Panthers vs. RamsSt. Louis Rams (3-3) at Carolina Panthers (2-3)) ST. LOUIS RAMS Play ‘Em If Got ‘Em No one is a must start on the Rams. Carolina’s defense is the real deal and none of the players on the Rams offense can produce consistent fantasy numbers.

Suggestion box, anyone?  Anyone?  Both Carolina and Minnesota have only tasted victory one time this season.  Someone has to win, right?  Good for them.  But let’s focus on you fantasy victory!

This week, we made some gut calls on Cam Newton, DeAngelo Williams, Graham Gano, Greg Olsen and the receiving corps.

A Penny’s Worth of Thoughts:

Cam Newton

#12 Ranked QB

We simply cannot in good faith continue to tell people that Cam Newton is a must start. His stats are all over the map. We think there is a possibility that he has a nice game, but this is a gut call. Last week Newton went back to that odd sideline behavior and lacked the vigor necessary to win a football game. And remember: in fantasy, we’re not as into winning the game so much as we are about yards and TDs. He couldn’t get that done either. He was sacked 7 times and never fell into a rhythm because of the sneakily good Arizona defense. Perhaps the coaching staff will go back to designed runs like in his Week 3, 30-fantasy-point outing. Too many unknowns to play without consideration. If you have a better option, don’t be afraid to play the other guy.

Fantasy Foreplay: Panthers vs. VikingsCarolina Panthers (1-3) at Minnesota Vikings (1-3) CAROLINA PANTHERS Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em No one is a must start after the disappointing game last week coming off the bye, but there are a lot of bubble players that you might want to consider if you’re in a bye week predicament.

Carolina Panthers at Arizona Cardinals

This week, we made some gut calls on Cam Newton, Carolina Defense, Greg Olson, DeAngelo Williams, and Steve Smith.

Fantasy Foreplay: Panthers v CardinalsCarolina Panthers (1-2) at Arizona Cardinals (2-2) CAROLINA PANTHERS Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em Bench Warmers ARIZONA CARDINALS Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em We’re not sure if anyone else should be on your starting roster this week. The offense needs to gel and the Carolina defense is pretty strong when it comes to ball security.

FPAA LogoThe gentlemen over at FPAAWeekly.com were so friendly and took the time to reach out a hand to us ladies over here at Her Fantasy Football.  They wanted to work up an article exchange and drum up more Fantasy Football conversation.

After some back and forth, we decided to make it a bit more of a debate, a competition.  I mean, that’s what Fantasy is all about, right?  Winning!

So, each week we’re going to ask each other a topical question regarding the wonderful fame of football.  Then we’ll duke it out and see who’s right.

And like typical boys, they’re ganging up on the lady friend.  Both Chris Adkins and Justin Brant weigh in on the issues of the week, while our Co-Host, Brandon Lee, holds down the fort.

New York Giants RB David Wilson probably made the largest ADP leap at the last minute.  Once Andre Brown got hurt, everyone jumped on him like he was the next coming…

Do you think he’ll live up to his draft position?

Chris – FPAA Weekly:

My first thought is this. PUMP THE BRAKES SPEED RACER  There are a few thing we have to remember when discussing David Wilson. First off he was the pseudo 3rd string running back last year and he mainly returned kicks. Second is that entering this year he was not a clear cut number one running back. That being said i do feel that he will have a productive 2013 season in the Giants offense, and to answer the question i do feel that he will live up to his draft position!

Brandon of Her Fantasy Football:

I’m having a tough time trusting a running back when he’s at the whim of Tom Coughlin.  That coach HATES fumbling and will not tolerate blown pass coverage. Sadly, David Wilson is  both.  You get to see that angry, red face on the sideline when one of Coughlin’s RBs let that ball touch the ground. I think Wilson improved (that was obvious with his preseason play), but I was shocked when people took him over Maurice Jones-Drew, Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson, Frank Gore and Reggie Bush.  He’s still unproven, in my eyes.   I’m not saying he’s terrible, or anything insane like that, but I didn’t feel comfortable going for him so early.  I got him in one league because I drafted right after Andre Brown hurt his leg.  The fact that until Brown fractured his leg the team listed Brown and Wilson as co-starters should give pause.

Justin – FPAA Weekly:

This depends on how you look at it. Was he worth reaching for and missing your number one WR? Absolutely not. My boss told me once, “No one is worth reaching for.”  What would I have done without him right? Is David Wilson going to blow it up and score boatloads of fantasy points? Absolutely. I’m currently on a boat. There are millions of fantasy points onboard. David Wilson is at the helm. Period. Truth.

David Wilson has fumbled only ONE time in his collegiate and professional career. I’ll let that sink in………….. ONE time. And while it is known that Tom Coughlin is the ADHD coach of the NFL, maybe only to be outdone by Mike Shanahan, no coach likes fumbles. David Wilson wasn’t needed last year so sitting him was too easy.  Rest assured, he won’t fumble any more than your top backs and I would wager half as many fumbles as any top 5 RB. David Wilson averaged 5.7yds per ATT in college and 4.4yds per ATT last year with the Giants. He is their only hope. Watch David Wilson burn down the house. Except against the Redskins. You should sit him against the Redskins. *Fact.  HTTR.

“Do you think the top three rushing quarterbacks from last year, (RGIII-815yds 7 TD’s, Newton-741yds 8 TD’s, Wilson-489yds 4 TD’s) will be able to achieve similar levels of success and how do you think your answer affects their playability when compared to similarly ranked QB’s?”

Chris – FPAA Weekly:

As the Modern day poet FLO-RIDA would say. I’ve got a good feeling. OK maybe not a poet, but you get the point. I’ve got a good feeling that theses three Quarter Backs will be able to achieve the same level of success and more. I will always start a Quarterback that runs over a QB that is a pocket passer, IF they are closely ranked. I always tend to go for the guy that has the higher upside.

Brandon of Her Fantasy Football:

I had such a hard time answering this question. But at the end of the day, I want a QB that is in the top 10 fantasy scores each week.  RGIII did that 10 times last year, but then he suffered an injury.  Shanahan will play it safe for a while, trying to reign in RGIII and then they will fight and then the QB will do what he wants.  And he wants to run if the run means yards.  I’m worried for his health, but if the guy is starting and on the field, he will make points.  Newton started all 16 games both of his years in the league, so I have little concern for injury, but I’m worried about his supporting staff.  Ugh.  Wilson seems like a safe play.  And I hope he’s good because I waited in a bunch of leagues and got him as my starter in the later rounds.  For where I got Wilson, he was perfect.  He was in the top 10 eight times last year, and then he was the number one scoring QB week one of the playoffs and the number two QB week two of the playoffs.  He’s on a bit of a roll, looked great in the preseason, and primed to overcome any sophomore slump questions.  I’d be lying if I said I would have taken Wilson over Brees, but I think all three of these guys will be consistent players on my beloved fantasy teams.

Justin – FPAA Weekly:

Running Quarterbacks are always difficult to predict, but when a guy has proven to be successful on runs designed for him, you can rest assured that his effectiveness as a runner won’t be diminished.

While historical numbers aren’t available for RGIII or Russell Wilson consider this, after Cam Newton’s amazing first season rushing, where he scored 14 rushing TD’s and ran for just over 700yds he was only able to reach the endzone 8 times in 2012. However, in 2012 he ran for 35 more yards, and rushed 5 more times for 20+ yards than he did the prior season. And people knew what he was capable of, all the while playing for the Panthers!

Cam Newton and Russell Wilson should both be able to repeat as long as the coaching staff deems them to be effective. And at this point, there is no reason to think otherwise.R

Robert Griffin III is a different story. It’s not so much his inability to reproduce last year’s performance, as it is his coaching staff’s unwillingness to let him take as many risks with his legs as he did last year. Don’t expect the kind of numbers you saw last year from him. There’s a tradeoff you are forced to make with a rushing QB. More yards, more hits. Russell Wilson has found a good balance between rushing success and throwing the ball that RGIII could learn from.

Ultimately, when it comes to these three guys, be confident in starting them over someone ranked slightly above them because their ceiling and upside will generally be much higher. But don’t feel like you have to. They’re no more injury prone than other guys just because they CAN run. They’re injury prone because of how OFTEN they run. Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Stafford are successful and are always dealing with some nagging injury. It’s just where the injury is that is usually different.

*Note: Last fact was not actually based on fact. Disregard.
