Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Jay Cutler

#7 Ranked QB

Now that we’ve seen him play we can safely tell you that you should start Cutler. The floor is SO HIGH when you have offensive weapons like Brandon Marshall (Cutler’s boyfriend, let’s be real), Alshon Jeffery, Matt Forte… He can only be so bad if he tries. Last week he passed for 265 yards and three TDs. Look for the same numbers this week because Philadelphia gives up the 6th most fantasy points to opposing QBs.  Let him eat cake!  And by the way, the Eagles also give up the absolute most points to opposing WRs so this will get ugly, as in AWESOME, if you own Cutler, Marshall or Jeffery.

Other Studs: Matt Forte (RB) #5, Brandon Marshall (WR) #4, Alshon Jeffery (WR) #6

Gut Calls

Martellus Bennett

#9 Ranked TE

Bennett is a PPR option more than a standard league option. He did catch all six of his targets last week for 71 yards, but then he fumbled… The Eagles give up the 3rd fewest fantasy points to opposing TEs, so he is a little risky. But aren’t all TEs a little risky this year?

Bench Warmers

Chicago Defense

#25 Ranked DEF

Some people still haven’t bought in to the Foles phenomenon. Well, we have because we actually watch football. Anyway, don’t play your defense against Foles and especially don’t do that if your defense isn’t very good, a.k.a. the Bears.

Antonio Brown

#7 Ranked WR

Okay, we get it! Antonio Brown is match-up proof! We love him! Seriously, last week they hosted Cincinnati and Brown caught five passes for 66 yards and one TD. He also had a return TD to put a cherry on top. Green Bay gives up the 6th most fantasy points to opposing WRs so play him.

Other Studs: LeVeon Bell (RB) #9

Gut Calls

Ben Roethlisberger

#16 Ranked QB

Roethlisberger had a nice game in real football, but a crappy fantasy day last week when they played Cincinnati. He should bounce back against the Packers. Roethlisberger is the 12th highest scoring fantasy QB on the season. If that surprised you, you are not alone.

For Your Consideration: Emmanuel Sanders (WR) #34, Jerricho Cotchery (WR) #57, Heath Miller (TE) #20

Bench Warmers

Pittsburgh Defense

#21 Ranked DEF

Once referred to as “The Steel Curtain” this defense ranks 23rd among all fantasy DEFs on the season. Green Bay probably won’t have Rodgers, but ask the Cowboys how Flynn worked out last week. It’s just too risky, especially when the Packers get to play at home.

Stop it.

Gut Calls

Andre Brown

#21 Ranked RB

Last week was an epic implosion for all Giants. It was hard to watch, but you need to know that Andre Brown is a great RB playing on a bad team. Sadly, Detroit gives up the 9th fewest fantasy points to opposing RBs so it might not get better. Sorry.

Bench Warmers

Eli Manning

#32 Ranked QB

This write-up simply highlights that we finally ranked Eli at #32 and we need to tell you that he scored -3.76 fantasy points last week after throwing five INTs at home against Seattle. Also, we want to preemptively shoot down the notion that next year he’ll bounce back and be a top QB.

Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

No one is an automatic Must Start at Seattle. Even Drew Brees.

Gut Calls

Rashard Mendenhall

#29 Ranked RB

You have to run against Seattle to have even the slightest chance of beating them. Seattle gives up the 5th fewest fantasy points to opposing RBs, but they give up the absolute fewest fantasy points to QBs and WRs. We keep saying it every week, but Coach Arians loves Mendenhall and he gets the majority of the work. He averaged 12.83 fantasy points over the last four weeks and that’s the 15th highest average out of all RBs in the league. He’s the least sexy pickup imaginable, but he’s getting it done.

Arizona Defense

#16 Ranked DEF

Seattle gives up the 7th fewest fantasy points to opposing DEFs, but Arizona seems to hold their own. They did only score 6.00 fantasy points the last time they played back in Week 7, but if that’s their floor you could do worse. Check out the waiver wire, but don’t run for the hills.

For Your Consideration: Andre Ellington (RB), Jay Feely (K)

Bench Warmers

Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd

#28 and #37 Ranked WR

Both of these players are listed as Questionable. Fitzgerald did not practice on Wednesday due to a concussion and Michael Floyd was limited in Wednesday’s practice due to an ankle injury. Seattle gives up the absolute fewest fantasy points to opposing WRs so sit both of them on the bench if you can.

Also Do Not Play: Carson Palmer (QB) #22, Rob Housler (TE) Not Ranked – doubtful with a groin injury

Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Bobby Rainey

#30 Ranked RB

Rainey was not good last week, to say the least. He only rushed for 27 yards on 11 carries against San Francisco. Tampa Bay gave up on the run early under the pressure of a point deficit, and we told you it was a bad match up. However, this week they go up against St Louis. The Rams give up the 5th most fantasy points to opposing RBs so this should be a better week. He’s inconsistent, but the match-up is right.

Other Studs: Vincent Jackson (WR) #12 – he should play, but he was limited in practice on Wednesday

Gut Calls

Tim Wright

#16 Ranked TE

Wright is the definition of “boom or bust.” Last week he caught seven passes for 82 yards and one TD. Other weeks he’ll catch one ball for 13 yards. St Louis gives up the 4th fewest fantasy points to opposing TEs, so this isn’t the best matchup for those with high hopes.

Bench Warmers

Mike Glennon

#28 Ranked QB

You wouldn’t dream of starting him. You shouldn’t. He’s at St Louis this week and then at New Orleans next week, but we like this guy for next year. If you’re on a dynasty league, we think a full off-season as the starter and a full year of play under his belt will make Glennon a contender in the “middle of the pack” set of QBs. Think Ryan Tannehill or Alex Smith kind of numbers.

Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

DeMarco Murray

#3 Ranked RB

Washington gives up the 3rd most fantasy points to opposing RBs and Murray is a stud. Dance with the one who brought you and feel lucky to have Murray while he’s hot. Over the last four games Murray averaged 19.40 points per game, second in the league only behind Jamaal Charles.

Other Studs: Dez Bryant (WR) #5, Jason Witten (TE) #4

Gut Calls

Tony Romo

#18 Ranked QB

Stop me if you’ve heard this story… two TDs and two INTs. This guy will drive you crazy. He hasn’t scored over 20 fantasy points since November 3 when they played the Vikings. This should be a good match-up, but Romo proves time and time again that he will squander a good fantasy match-up. Where does that leave you? Well, if you are in the championship and you rode him all the way there, you can keep hoping the rest of your team will pull their weight. But if you on in a consolation bracket and you need more, look for Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick or Ryan Tannehill.

Bench Warmers

Dallas Defense

#20 Ranked DEF

Don’t get cute and pretend that Kirk Cousins will somehow implode and Dallas will suddenly grow a defense. Last week, the whole defensive squad pretty much didn’t show up for the second half of the game against Green Bay. And the week before that, Dallas scored a whopping -3.00 fantasy points at Chicago. The Cowboys have scored zero or less fantasy points four times this year. Don’t think about it.

Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Alex Smith

#8 Ranked QB

Five out of Smith’s seven home games yielded 20 or more fantasy points. You will hear that Smith doesn’t throw down field and you will hear that Jamaal Charles did almost all of the work last week. And that is true, but by hook or by crook, Alex Smith is the 2nd highest scoring fantasy QB in the league over the last four weeks, and the 8th highest on the season. At some point we need to give credit where credit is due.

Jamaal Charles

#1 Ranked DEF

Last week Jamaal Charles had the 6th best fantasy performance by a RB since 1960. If five TDs in one game didn’t sell you, nothing will.  Fantasy MVP.

Kansas City Defense

#3 Ranked DEF

They’re back, baby!!! Two weeks ago they sacked RGIII six times, leading to some remote justification of his benching (and we stress the word “remote”). Then last week they picked off Matt McGloin five times. Andrew Luck has all the talent in the world, but if there’s no running game and your offensive line resembles Swiss cheese there’s only so much you can do. Play the Chiefs.

Gut Calls

There are three fantasy starters on this team (see above) and everyone else is on the bench.

Bench Warmers

Dwayne Bowe

#30 Ranked WR

Bowe has yet to acquire more than 70 passing yards in a game this season and he’s only scored four TDs. You need more from your starting WR in the championship round.

Delanie Walker

#7 Ranked TE

Hopefully you listened to the show last week and started our sleeper Mr. Walker.  Last week he caught eight passes for 53 yards and one TD against Arizona, the team that gives up the absolute most fantasy points to opposing TEs.  And now he goes up against the Jaguars who give up the 2nd most fantasy points to opposing TEs.  Look for a repeat!

Ryan Fitzpatrick

#6 Ranked RB

Fitzpatrick struggled against Denver, but that was his only game in which he scored less than 15 fantasy points since Week 10.  This guy is a fantasy stud.  If you can’t ride the Romo roller coaster anymore, or if you lost RGIII but didn’t get Kirk Cousins on waivers, you want Fitzpatrick.  Jacksonville gives up the 3rd most fantasy points to opposing QBs.  This should be fun.

Chris Johnson

#13 Ranked RB

He’s one of the only true featured RBs in the league.  You have to start him and you will be pleased.

Kendall Wright

#18 Ranked WR

Welcome back, Kendall!  Not only did Wright catch 12 passes for 150 yards last week, but he looked good doing it.  Play with ease.

Gut Calls

Nate Washington

#61 Ranked RB

In desperation mode?  Looking for an upside WR?  Here’s your guy.  Last week Washington caught seven passes for 92 yards.  Speaking of last week, did you know that Ryan Fitzpatrick threw the ball 61 times?  That’s what you call “a lot of opportunities.”  Maybe this week he can get into the end zone….

Tennessee Defense

#10 Ranked DEF

This looks like a good matchup, but Jacksonville has been better lately and Tennessee scored ZERO or less fantasy points in three of their last four games.  That’s not good.

Bench Warmers

Consider starting everyone.  Seriously.

Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Here are some defensive numbers that may come as a surprise to you: New Orleans gives up the 4th fewest fantasy points to opposing QBs, the 13th fewest to RBs, the 6th fewest to WRs, the 9th fewest to TEs and the 4th fewest to opposing DEFs. Oh, and for good measure, they give up the 5th fewest fantasy points to opposing Kickers as well. This game will be a defensive battle, so the chance of fantasy gold is slim.

Gut Calls

Cam Newton

#13 Ranked QB

The last time these two teams played (in other words, two weeks ago) Cam scored 15.20 fantasy points. That was an away game, but we still think he’ll be in the 15 to 17 point range at home. Last week he played against the Jets at home and Cam scored 16.12 fantasy points. Are you smelling what we’re stepping in? Those numbers won’t lose your match-up for you, but they won’t put you over the top either. He’s a stud, but maybe not the studliest in this match up.

Carolina Defense

#11 Ranked DEF

The Panthers Defense is superb. However, their worst game of the season was against the Saints two weeks ago when they only garnered 1.00 fantasy points for their owners. Ouch. We think they will fare better at home, but you can’t count on a double-digit fantasy outing when your defense goes up against Brees. But don’t fear. If you play fantasy in Week 17, the Panthers play the Falcons. Whoopie!

Bench Warmers

Steve Smith

#33 Ranked WR

This is the championship. Steve Smith only scored double-digit fantasy numbers in three games this entire season. You’re better off taking a chance on a Cordelle Patterson from the Vikings or Ace Saunders from the Jaguars than taking the five or so fantasy points you know Steve Smith will get you.

Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Tony Gonzalez

#8 Ranked TE

I am glad to see that at the very end of the season he is showing up. I guess better now than never. In the last three weeks he has scored 10, 8 and 12 points and has scored a TD in each game.

Gut Calls

Roddy White

#22 Ranked WR

Roddy was hot for a little bit there and cooled off last week. Problem is that the Falcons will be playing the 49ers who give up the 4th fewest points to opposing WRs. He shouldn’t be terrible but look to your roster to see if you have a more favorable match-up.

Steven Jackson

#22 Ranked RB

He had a very mediocre game against the Redskins whose DEF is TERRIBLE! The 49ers are much more stout so Jackson should have a more difficult time. If you are going to turn to him, turn to him as a Flex.

Bench Warmers

Matt Ryan

#24 Ranked QB

He only scored 8 points against the Washington Redskins. Let that soak in. 8 whole points against the Redskins. The 49ers give up the 3rd fewest points to QBs so Ryan gets two thumbs down this week.
