Visit a website covering free agency and you will see hysteria due to the lack of wide receivers in Carolina. And even though that is a real problem, there is a silver lining.
Here is a list of the top four Carolina Panther wide receivers in 2013… and their new team:
Steve Smith – now with the Baltimore Ravens
Brandon LaFell – now with the New England Patriots
Ted Ginn, Jr. – now with the Arizona Cardinals
Domenik Hixon – now with the Chicago Bears
Literally, the Panthers do not have a SINGLE wide receiver on their team that caught a ball thrown by Cam Newton last year. That is truly unbelievable.
Here at Her Fantasy Football headquarters, we like to look on the bright side. If you are a Panthers fan, stay concerned. It’s scary. But if you are a fantasy football player, here is the upside:
- Greg Olsen (TE) was the number one receiver on the Panthers last year and he’s still on the team. Whew! Last year Olsen caught 73 passes for 851 yards and eight touchdowns. Cam loves him and will have to depend on him more than ever. This will be especially true at the beginning of the season while Cam builds a chemistry with the new wide receiver teammates.
- Speaking of Cam Newton, just today he underwent ankle surgery to tighten up stretched out ligaments in his left ankle. The recovery time is expected to last four months. That takes him right up to camp. Sadly, this means he won’t be physically able to develop a chemistry with his new receivers before the team organized activities.
- If you play in a dynasty league you MUST pickup the Panther’s top wide receiver draft pick. Carolina must rebuild this position and every expert out there thinks this is a great class for wide outs. I wouldn’t be surprised if Carolina decided to trade and move up to draft one of the two top prospects: Mike Evans from Texas A&M or Sammy Watkins from Clemson. No matter who ends up in Carolina, they will be on the field and featured this year and for the years to come. I would venture to say that a rookie Panthers receiver could be one of the safest bets you could take on your dynasty league.
- And don’t forget about the three-headed-monster backfield. Look for Cam to lean on DeAngelo Williams, Mike Tolbert and Jonathan Stewart. DeAngelo was the number one Panther running back last year, but did you know that Jonathan Stewart is only 26 years old?!?! Maybe they’ll give him another look. And look for Tolbert to score touchdowns, as always. Maybe there is more receiving in each of their futures… DeAngelo Williams seems to think so. Do you agree?
