It is still very early in the preseason, but this week we will talk through the quarterback rankings; and discuss if we agree or disagree with the placement of players based on moves made this off-season and performance last year.
In this episode, Brandon has softened her stance on Eli Manning this year which is shocking, and Ashley hopes that the fear factor of Andrew Luck not being able to play last year will drop Carson Wentz slightly where his value will be off the charts.

There is just one more week left in the regular season. For many that means the fantasy season is already over. However, for the few that may still be playing in Week 17 without a sure thing at QB Zach has got you covered. First let’s look back at Week 16. With four QBs left to play at the time of writing, Kirk Cousins sits at QB #1 for the week! Johnny Manziel did nothing as a passer but ran for over 100 yards to give himself an alright day. Teddy Bridgewater is warming up before the start of his game as I write this.

So for one final week - for this article I will look at two QBs owned in 50% or less of Fleaflicker leagues and another QB owned in 25% or less to account for the QB scarcity in 2QB leagues. The waiver wire is always thinner this time of the year but there is always a good stream if you look hard enough! As a side note, there are a few QBs right around 50% owned that I have written about several times that I seriously doubt are unowned in any really competitive league. Those are Ryan Fitzpatrick (48%), Tyrod Taylor (48%) and Alex Smith (49%). If those guys are unowned, go ahead and add them. I’m going to focus on less talked about QBs here.
Standard League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 17

Sam Bradford (PHI) @ Giants

OWNED IN: 36% of Fleaflicker leagues

Bradford has scored 16 and 17 fantasy points in his last two games (vs Arizona / vs Washington) and on paper this is an even easier matchup. Heading into Week 16 the Giants had given up 15 fantasy points or more in seven straight matchups. That is a really long streak! Even the terrible Saints have held two QBs under 15 points during that time.

So now Sam Bradford strolls into town with both teams eliminated from the playoff race and their coaches arguably playing for their jobs. I think Chip Kelly will keep his starters in as long as they are healthy. Bradford has been connecting with Jordan Matthews and Zach Ertz more often since returning from injury. Based on what both teams have shown lately, 16-20 points seems like a reasonable expectation.

Brandon Weeden (HOU) vs Jaguars

OWNED IN: 3% of Fleaflicker Leagues

If there is one thing Brandon Weeden does really well I would have to say it is feeding his top weapon in the receiving game over and over. We saw it with Josh Gordon in 2013 and we saw it with DeAndre Hopkins (11 targets on 24 pass attempts leading to a 7-117-1 line) in Week 16. He should be able to match or possibly exceed that feat against the Jaguars.

This Jaguars team was eliminated from the playoffs before taking the field in Week 16 and they played like a demoralized team. Will they step it up in Week 17 with little to play for? That is a big question that may be a key to Weeden’s overall performance. Weeden was aided by a rushing touchdown last week but he was still worth 14 points as a passer. I think he can hit the 15 point mark here.

Deeper League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 17

A.J. McCarron (CIN) vs Ravens

OWNED IN: 6% of Fleaflicker Leagues

I don’t really care what McCarron does Monday Night against Denver, his matchup against that elite defense won’t say much about his performance against the Ravens. Here’s what we know about McCarron from his first two games with significant playing time: He has the weapons to succeed around him, and he is extremely confident, sometimes to a fault. Overconfidence has led to some poor decisions and some big plays. It makes him a boom/bust player but one worth taking a risk on in this matchup. Sure we did see Ben Roethlisberger put up an unexpectedly awful performance in Week 16 but I don’t see any reason to think it can happen again. Even after that game the Ravens have allowed 28 passing touchdowns to just six interceptions. That is terrible and exactly that kind of matchup that McCarron should thrive in. There is plenty of upside here if you don’t mind a little risk.

Last week this column feature two obvious QB streams that turned out to be…not so obvious. Ryan Fitzpatrick was right at my stream threshold of 15 points. Underwhelming but acceptable. Meanwhile Alex Smith fell victim to game flow as the Chiefs went up 21-7 early behind a big Charcandrick West run and a defensive score. They were able to play clock management the rest of the way and Smith never had the chance to do the damage I believe he was capable of doing here. Lastly, A.J. McCarron which was better than several other deep league options but Jimmy Clausen of all people ended up being the best.

Moving on, Week 16 is championship week for many. That probably means you have a stable QB, but I’m sure there are still a few people out there in search of a QB. So let’s turn our heads towards the best of Week 16! A couple players reached the 50% ownership mark this past week but make for nice streams if they are out there - Alex Smith and Jameis Winston.

For this article Zach will look at two QBs owned in 50% or less of Fleaflicker leagues and another QB owned in 25% or less to account for the QB scarcity in 2QB leagues. The waiver wire is always thinner this time of the year but there is always a good stream if you look hard enough!

Standard League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 16

Teddy Bridgewater (MIN) vs Giants

OWNED IN: 36% of Fleaflicker leagues

Streaming against the Giants has worked very well the last several weeks. Over the last seven games, every QB has scored at least 15 points. The Giants have also given up the most passing yards on the entire season. Meanwhile Teddy Bridgewater appears to be getting hot at the right time.

Last week Bridgewater set a career high in passing yards vs a tough Cardinals defense. This week he had the best game of his career. After never having more than two touchdowns in a game, he easily passed that with five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing). I do worry about how blah Teddy had been up until this little hot streak, but I’m willing to put my belief in him. It’s hard to imagine him slowing down against this Giants team.

Kirk Cousins (WAS) @ Eagles

OWNED IN: 36% of Fleaflicker Leagues

I have something to admit. I have not given Cousins nearly enough respect this season. After his third 25+ point game, it’s finally time to acknowledge the really nice season that Cousins is having. He has more points than preseason favorites Ryan Tannehill and Matt Ryan. That isn’t saying much but those two (Ryan especially) get a lot of respect on name value.

The Eagles really struggle against QBs. In Week 15 Carson Palmer didn’t actually do much, but only because David Johnson was able to do so much on the ground. The Redskins are far less likely to run all over any team. If they are going to score it has to be through the air, and that is exactly what happened in Week 15 when Cousins threw for four touchdowns. Maybe he won’t do that much but Desean Jackson is healthy and back to full speed and Jordan Reed is playing at an elite level. He should be able to put up good points again this week.

Deeper League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 16

Johnny Manziel (CLE) @ Chiefs

OWNED IN: 16% of Fleaflicker Leagues

I’m kind of disappointed that Manziel hasn’t run more this season because that would make him a LOT more interesting from a fantasy perspective. Out of the QBs owned in under 25% of leagues, I’m still liking him the most anyway. It’s a lot of ugly names and Manziel has some upside. In Weeks 12 & 14 he threw for 372 and 270 yards. Week 15 he was up against Seattle, a tough task for any quarterback. I thought he did a respectable job with just one interception while completing 59% of his passes.

Manziel knows he is playing to set himself up for a shot at the starting role in 2016. I think he may finally be turning the page and starting to ‘get it’. The Chiefs matchup is an interesting one. They started off the season horribly, and then went through a five game stretch where they gave up just four passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Now over the last four games they are somewhere in the middle, giving up multiple passing touchdowns in three of the last four games while also making some big plays defensively. My thinking is if Jimmy Clausen can throw two touchdowns with the Ravens receivers, there is no reason Manziel can’t as well.

Zach hopes you made it through your first playoff matchup or advanced into the playoffs in Week 14! Unfortunately the QB streams were pretty disappointing. Tyrod Taylor delivered a decent game that meets our standards but it was still underwhelming given the matchup.

In a huge surprise, Jameis Winston totally flopped on what should have been a golden matchup. Lastly, Brian Hoyer was terrible on Sunday night against the Patriots. In deeper leagues and 2QB Leagues, Hoyer may have killed playoff chances. If you survived, it’s time to move on and look towards the next stream. An obvious mention that I felt didn’t need it’s own writeup: Andrew Luck has a good chance to play this week. If he is unowned, run out and scoop him up!

For this article I will look at two QBs owned in 50% or less of Fleaflicker leagues and another QB owned in 25% or less to account for the QB scarcity in 2QB leagues. The waiver wire is always thinner this time of the year but there is always a good stream if you look hard enough!

Standard League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 15

Alex Smith (KC) @ Ravens

OWNED IN: 48% of Fleaflicker leagues

I recommend Smith about every other week. Last week I shied away and he didn’t meet my threshold of 15 points, so I’ll take that as a positive! He did hit double digits for the 11th straight game. He will definitely continue that streak against the pitiful Ravens. The Ravens are one of the worse teams vs QBs and just got brutalized by Russell Wilson.

Expect the usual Smith with a little more upside than usual. He probably won’t throw an interception (although he did throw one in Week 14 for the first time since Week 3!) and he will probably run for 30 yards. I like his odds of throwing multiple touchdowns here - the Ravens have given up 27 pass touchdowns this season. If he can do that, he’ll give you a really good performance on the high end for Alex Smith.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (NYJ) @ Cowboys

OWNED IN: 43% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Fitzmagic is on fire right now with three straight starts of 24 or more fantasy points. His WR duo of Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker has proven to be too much for defenses to stop lately. The Cowboys are a solid but not great defense, and I don’t think that will be enough to stop this team.

The Cowboys are bottom 10 in points allowed to QBs, but they’ve also allowed double digit fantasy points in seven straight matchups. That ensures a high floor which is good for Fitz. I’m more than happy to gamble on the talent of Fitzpatrick’s wide receivers carrying him to a solid day.

Deeper League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 15

A.J. McCarron (CIN) @ 49ers

OWNED IN: 1% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Yep, I am diving right in here for AJ’s first career start. Dalton is out with a fractured thumb and McCarron is eager to make the most of his opportunity. We saw the good and the bad in the first significant playing time of his career. He threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns. That included a deep pass to A.J. Green and I like seeing the willingness of the offense to go deep with their inexperienced QB. He also had two costly interceptions.

There is also the worry that against the 49ers the Bengals can and will run the ball 30+ times and limit McCarron. My thinking is if you are in a deep league where your options are limited to the lowest owned QBs such as the Manziels, Gabberts and Hasselbeck’s of the world, McCarron in this offense is worth gambling on. I might give Manziel the nod in another week but against the Seahawks he is an easy avoid. Rather than rolling with an old and/or untalented QB, if you are desperate to find a QB plug this week, McCarron is the guy.

If you read this article for Week 13 and put your playoff hopes on the line with one of my suggested streams, you were rewarded with big days! Ryan Fitzpatrick had one of the best games of his career with 390 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Meanwhile Alex Smith had a very typical 162 passing yards and no interceptions, but added two pass touchdowns and a rushing score to give himself a really nice day. Hasselbeck struggled Sunday night

For this article Zach will look at two QBs owned in 50% or less of Fleaflicker leagues and another QB owned in 25% or less to account for the QB scarcity in 2QB leagues. There are definitely some good QBs readily available if you need a stream in what is the first week of the playoffs for many!

Standard League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 14

Tyrod Taylor (BUF) @ Eagles

OWNED IN: 41% of Fleaflicker leagues

Tyrod has now had 25+ points in two consecutive games. Frankly I’m shocked his ownership is this low after the game he had against the Chiefs. He added three passing touchdowns again vs the Texans while also notching his first rushing touchdown since Week 5. Taylor looked a bit off in his previous two games but it’s clear he is locked in now.

He gets a very weak Eagles pass defense in Week 14. The Eagles have given up 13 pass touchdowns over their last three games. I’m expecting Sammy Watkins to tear up the Eagles secondary. Given the way that defense has played lately, I’m having a hard time not seeing Taylor in the top ten this week.

Jameis Winston (TB) vs Saints

OWNED IN: 48% of Fleaflicker Leagues

I don’t think I really need to say a whole lot here. We’ve gotten to the point where starting a QB against the Saints is just an automatic thing. The Saints are now up to a whopping 35 touchdowns allowed to six interceptions after giving up five more to Cam Newton this week. Over the last six weeks quarterbacks have averaged an astonishing 28 fantasy points per game against this team.

Winston will have a healthy Vincent Jackson back to go along with Mike Evans in the middle of a really nice sophomore season. He also has Austin Seferian-Jenkins back, and although he was pretty quiet this week (three catches for 31 yards), that’s another weapon added. The Bucs like to limit Winston’s pass attempts if they get a lead and that’s definitely the one concern here - we saw that come into play with Brian Hoyer against the Saints a few weeks ago. Even with this concern his floor is very high. If Drew Brees can keep the Saints offense scoring as well, the sky is the limit for Winston.

Deeper League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 14

Brian Hoyer (HOU) vs Patriots

OWNED IN: 22% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Hoyer has now had at least 14 fantasy points in eight of ten games this season. The two that he didn’t he missed at least 15 snaps due to being benched and due to an injury. In his most recent game he had 293 passing yards and three touchdowns against a so-so Bills defense. He now gets a similarly average defense in the Patriots.

As far as QBs owned in under 25% of leagues, this late in the season it doesn’t get much better than Hoyer. He has an elite weapon in DeAndre Hopkins with nice secondary options in Cecil Shorts and Nate Washington. Those players have allowed him to put up decent points week after week. The Patriots have played some decent defense lately, holding QBs to 12 or fewer points in the last three weeks. Hopkins likely will not be stopped. I’m confident that Hoyer can do better.

For Week 12, Johnny Manziel was thrown out after he got benched for partying. Of the other two, Jameis Winston delivered a solid 15.5 points. Nothing flashy, but acceptable for a stream. Brock Osweiler was disappointing for most of the night, but saved himself with a touchdown and some decent yardage late. Still, has night wasn’t quite up to the standards of what I’m looking for (15 points). Last week’s column featured three young guys with youth and inexperience. This week I’ll turn to veterans that have proven very reliable this season!

For this article Zach will look at two QBs owned in 50% or less of Fleaflicker leagues and another QB owned in 25% or less to account for the position’s scarcity in 2QB leagues. There are definitely some good quarterbacks readily available if you need a stream in this week.

Standard League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 13

Alex Smith (KC) @ Raiders

OWNED IN: 44% of Fleaflicker leagues

Smith continues to deliver solid fantasy performances. Week 12 was his eighth straight week without a turnover. Now he gets a much much easier matchup in the Raiders. The Raiders give up the fourth most points to QBs and that continued this past week as Marcus Mariota threw for three touchdowns.

I certainly don’t expect 3 touchdowns from Alex Smith - he’s done that just once all season. What I can see happening is a repeat of last week: 250 yards, a couple touchdowns and a little bit in the rushing column. That will give you 18-20 points and a really nice stream.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (NYJ) @ Giants

OWNED IN: 30% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Fitzpatrick is coming off of his best game of the season. He threw for 4 touchdowns and no turnovers against the Dolphins. On paper, his Week 13 matchup in a quasi-home game is even better. The Giants allow the most passing yards and that trend continued as Kirk Cousins passed for over 300 yards.

Fitzpatrick probably won’t throw for 300 yards. He hasn’t done that all season. He should find himself in the 250-275 range with 2 or 3 touchdowns and an interception. Fitzpatrick is very similar to Alex Smith in a way. He’s pretty much guaranteed to hit double digits (the only game he didn’t was when he got hurt). He’s a very safe stream with upside this week.

Deeper League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 13

Matt Hasselbeck (IND) @ Steelers

OWNED IN: 10% of Fleaflicker Leagues

At this point in the season, the guys still out there in deeper leagues are available with good reason. Hasselbeck is a 40 year old who hadn’t been a fantasy relevant QB (even as a stream) since 2011. Yet here he is with four starts and a 4-0 record and four double digit fantasy games. It’s strange but it’s working. If you’re desperate it’s time to give the old man a shot!

The Steelers looked like a terrible pass defense early in the season but then turned it around big time. Over their last three games, they are back to looking awful. They’ve given up 300+ yards in each of the last three games, including 372 to Johnny Manziel! And in the two games with halfway decent QBs? Derek Carr threw 4 touchdowns and Russell Wilson had 5. 250 yards and two scores seems like a pretty safe bet. 300 yards and 3 touchdowns is definitely not out of the question either. He’s got some talented receivers and they’ll be put to good use here.

In Week 11, all three of my waiver wire streamers from last week’s column reached double digits, but none of them really went off. I felt like Ryan Fitzpatrick really didn’t play well at all but he saved his day with a rushing score. On the opposite end, Alex Smith had a great game with a season high 10 yards per attempt, but didn’t score. That kept his point total to just 13 points. Meanwhile my deep league pick of Mark Sanchez delivered a very Sanchez-like performances with two touchdowns and three picks.

For this article Zach will look at two QBs owned in 50% or less of Fleaflicker leagues and another QB owned in 25% or less to account for the position’s scarcity in 2QB leagues. There are definitely some good quarterbacks readily available if you need a stream in this week.

Standard League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 12

Jameis Winston (TB) @ Colts

OWNED IN: 36% of Fleaflicker leagues

Winston just put up the best game of his young career with an incredible five touchdowns and no interceptions. He now gets a Colts team that has given up multiple touchdowns in five of its last six games. Perhaps the most impressive part of Winston’s season is that he has no turnovers in five of his last six games. That is an incredibly rare trait for a rookie QB, especially one with Winston’s past body of work.

Winston’s weapons are also improving as well. Vincent Jackson is back and I think next week is our best bet to see Austin Seferian-Jenkins back as well. I have no doubt V-Jax was a big help in Winston’s stellar performance against the Eagles. It’s a good thing too - with Vontae Davis covering one of the WRs, it will be a big plus to have a second talented guy to throw to next week. I expect at least 15 points from Winston this week.

Brock Osweiler (DEN) @ Patriots

OWNED IN: 21% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Osweiler may now be 4 years into his career but he finally recorded his first start and looked very impressive in the process. He had 250 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers and a 74% completion rate. All of this happened without Emmanuel Sanders. If Osweiler gets Sanders back next week I think he can handle this tough matchup without too much trouble.

Heading into their Monday night matchup, the Patriots have given up at least 295 passing yards in four of their last five matchups. This is largely the result of teams having to throw a ton to keep up with undefeated New England (39+ attempts in each of the last six games). I think the Broncos will likely have to keep the trend going despite their defense. If Brock Osweiler has to throw 40 times, I have no doubt he will put up good numbers with the talent around him.

Deeper League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 12

Johnny Manziel (CLE) vs Ravens

OWNED IN: 16% of Fleaflicker Leagues

In keeping with the theme of this week’s streamers, Johnny Manziel is yet another QB coming off a career best game in his last start. Although the Browns did lose 30-9, Manziel threw for 372 yards and a touchdown and completed over 70% of his passes. He did have two turnovers, but hey - we’re digging deep here!

Heading into Week 11, the Ravens had given up the 2nd most points to opposing QBs. That will surely change after Case Keenum’s poor performance but I am much more optimistic about Manziel. The Ravens will be a morally defeated team after losing Joe Flacco and Justin Forsett in one game. Additionally, Manziel’s weapons in the passing game - Gary Barnidge, Travis Benjamin and Duke Johnson are far better than the Rams (Tavon Austin, Kenny Britt and Todd Gurley…Well maybe not Gurley). The Ravens are a secondary that is short on talent this season. Even though Manziel lacks some skill as a passer, he should have a solid game here.
