Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Vernon Davis

#4 Ranked TE

Davis faces a tough matchup against the St. Louis Rams who have allowed the 4th fewest points to fantasy TEs. However, with the return of Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree defenses will spread their coverage more evenly. This means more man coverage for Davis and more points for your fantasy team. The last time Davis faced the Rams he came away with 7.8 fantasy points. Expect Davis to improve on those numbers, as defenses can no longer focus all their coverage on the talented TE. Davis has five TDs in his last six games.

Anquan Boldin

#33 Ranked WR

Boldin is coming off his second biggest performance of the season with five catches for 94 yards and two TDs. In his last two games he has 11 catches for 150 yards and three TDs. That’s borderline elite level production. With the return of Crabtree and Manningham, opposing defenses are forced to choose who they want to cover. So far, they have chosen in Boldin’s favor. Play him with confidence this week.

Frank Gore

#9 Ranked RB

Frank Gore owners are panicking after two straight weeks of really bad performances. Gore scored just nine fantasy points in the last two games, combined. On Monday night he failed to reach the end zone from the 6 yard line and then lost the TD when Kaepernick threw it to Davis in the back of the end zone on the next play. The last time the 49ers faced the Rams, Gore rushed for a season best of 153 yards and a TD. Gore remains a top tier RB.

Bench Warmers

Colin Kaepernick

#20 Ranked QB

Kaepernick is coming off his second best outing of the year after shredding the weak Redskins Defense. It will be tempting to give him another shot against the Rams, but at this point he is still just a matchup based, mid-range, QB2. The Rams are giving up the 14th fewest points to opposing QBs, which isn’t enough to trust Kaepernick this week. The return of Crabtree and Manningham will help, but he still looks confused in the pocket at times. It will be at least a week or two before Kaepernick proves he can be trusted, just in time for fantasy playoffs.

Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree

#71 Ranked WR and #53 Ranked WR

Manningham was targeted seven times for 45 yards in the Monday night victory over the Redskins. While this performance isn’t the result fantasy owners are looking for, it’s a good indication that Manningham’s role in the offense will continue to increase.  For now, Manningham stays on your bench. Even though Crabtree and Kaepernick have undeniable chemistry, the two haven’t played together in almost a year. Also, don’t except Crabtree to return to 100% this season, which means he will play the dreaded decoy role for the next few weeks. This should help Davis and Mannigham get space in the secondary, but not help your fantasy team.

Play ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Carolina Panthers Defense

#5 Ranked DEF

We love this squad.  Last week they embarrassed San Francisco.   And even though we don’t see Brady allowing a similar humiliation on Monday Night Football, the Panthers defense finds a way to force turnovers and score fantasy points.

Gut Calls

Cam Newton

#10 Ranked QB

Out of respect to his frustrated owners, we put him in Gut Calls.  Also, New England gives up the 10th fewest fantasy points to opposing QBs.  But you know that the minute you bench this guy, he blows up and plays like a champion.  He keeps burning his owners, so we understand if you can’t take it anymore.  Steve Smith did drop a portion of the passes, but it’s hard to ignore Cammy Cam’s performance.  Last week Cam passed for 169 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT and only rushed for 17 yards.  Ugly.  This is a Gut Call of epic proportions.

Bench Warmers

DeAngelo Williams, Mike Tolbert and Jonathan Stewart

#34 and #39 and #41 Ranked RB

You should want nothing to do with this three-headed monster.  The three of them will not get the volume you need for a fantasy starter.  One of these backs may score a TD, but do you really want to play that guessing game on Sunday morning?  If you do, odds say Tolbert would be the one to score.  But Williams scored last week, so you never know.  And let’s be real, this is a game of probability, and you want to be as sure as possible.  It’s ugly out there.
