Back in the good ‘ole days, let’s say March, Goodson was considered a great free agent sleeper with tremendous upside who seemed to have simply been buried in depth charts since he entered the league. The first three years of his career he was a Carolina Panther, the number three in the “committee of two” known as D’Angelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Then he went to the Oakland Raiders and found himself odd man out again behind Darren McFadden and Marcel Reece. But the NY Jets picked him up and he was figuring as the guy to beat for the starting position. Even when the Jets picked up Chris Ivory most people still thought Goodson had a shot.

However, in the early morning on Friday, May 17, Mike Goodson was arrested and since then pled guilty to the five drug and gun related charges filed against him. According to the New Jersey State police report, Goodson was “incoherent, slobbering and had vomited all over himself as well as the interior of the vehicle.” Reportedly hospitalized for intoxication, Goodson claims not to have known about the fully loaded (with hollow-point bullets) gun in the vehicle. And for a bonus, police found a “baggie of marijuana in Goodson’s pants pocket.”

Whenever I hear these sorts of stories I always hope these guys can get it together. And I do hope for the best for this young man. Sadly, he’s faced more than one other paternity suit, an unpaid jewelry bill and was sued for unpaid rent. But I’d like to share a quote from his lawyer, Tony Fresco Jr., while defending his client to none other than the NY Daily News:

“We’ve had a President who had an affair in the White House. We’ve had a congressman who took pictures of himself and now he’s running for mayor. The only thing that Mike is running for, is for touchdowns,” the attorney said. “He’s not running for President or Congress. He’s playing football, he wants to run, and run for his team.”

Does that political connection seem far-fetched? Certainly. But entertaining, none the less.

This could be his worst birthday month, ever. On May 23, Mike Goodson turned only 26 years young. The Jets plan on waiting for the judicial system to run its course before coming to a final decision regarding Goodson’s role on the team, but for now you can pretty much guarantee he’ll be behind Chris Ivory. And you should put money on him falling behind Bilal Powell as well. The NY Jets cannot afford any more off the field distractions.

Lest I remind you of my rule… Do not draft an offensive NY Jets player to your fantasy team. Just say no.
