Tampa Bay Buccaneers May Take QB in First Round of Draft
Mike Glennon might ride the pine next year… and it’s sort of sad.
Pat Yasinskas from ESPN reported on Thursday that new head coach, Lovie Smith, confirmed at the combine that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are considering taking a quarterback in the first round. The Bucs have the 7th overall pick so they could have a nice pick of the litter.
Whenever you have a chance to get a franchise quarterback, you have to consider that.Lovie Smith, Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
If you are Mike Glennon, you’re probably bummed. You started off the year as a rookie backup to Josh Freeman. Freeman and your coach, Greg Schiano, bicker during the preseason and the first few regular season games until the team ships off Freeman in a dramatic manner. You get thrown in as the starting quarterback for a team that goes 0-8, has massive coaching and leadership issues and can’t keep a running back healthy to save their lives. You do your best, learn along the way and attempt to overcome one of the worst rookie situations in the league. With practically all odds against him, Glennon still averaged a 83.9 passer rating. Not fabulous, but he showed promise.
And even though Schiano reportedly lost the locker room early in the season, Glennon was his guy. Glennon is not Lovie Smith’s guy, so he’ll have to prove himself all over again. However, Smith seems impressed with Glennon’s work ethic and has nice things to say about him and his passing ability.
To say right now that Mike is the answer and he’s our quarterback of the future and we’re going to build around him and give him a 20-year contract right now, you’re not there. You just like the things he brings to the table. Strong arm. Great guy. He is a guy that seems like he doesn’t have an off-season because he has been working his butt off in the facility. But again, I just know I like him on the football team as one of our quarterbacks right now. Lovie Smith, Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Mike Glennon will put up a fight, and he should. It’s always difficult to garner favor over the shiny new toy, but we wish Glennon the best of luck. May the best quarterback win.
The only sure this is that the team adopted a meaner looking skull for a mascot. I’m into it. Check it out.
