Dish of the Week- Hot Dish

This is one of my favorite guilty pleasure meals and exactly what you think of when you think of comfort food. Hot Dish is a term used in the Midwest and Great Lakes area that refers to a casserole. I have no idea where my mom got this recipe or why it is simply called Hot Dish instead of sweet corn and ground beef casserole, or something equally as boring and descriptive, but that gem of a name is what it is called and it is delicious. This meal serves a ton and is perfect for a large get together for a game. It is super easy to make and is one of those great meals that tastes even better the next day so bust out your tupperware and start portioning out meals for the week!

This meal is jam packed with goodness so you could probably get away with some gluten free noodles and not even have the picky eaters in the house notice the difference. (Yes, I am one of those people that is not supposed to eat gluten but it is so hard with dishes like these in the recipe box!) Also, don’t be shy with the cheese and make sure your get it nice and crispy on the top. What is better than burnt cheese? I can’t think of anything; okay maybe a Broncos Superbowl victory, but burnt cheese is a very close second! This dish is a crowd pleaser so get cooking:)

Hot Dish

  • 1 pound ground beef, browned
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 can tomato soup
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 1 medium size can of creamed corn
  • 1 6-8 ounce package of egg noodles cooked
  • ½ cup or more sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

 

Brown hamburger and drain. Mix all ingredients except cheese. Place in casserole dish and top with cheese. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for an hour.
