Time for Change

Michael Sam was a big man this week and came out as being gay. His Missouri college teammates were told by Sam last August, but the news broke outside of that locker room right before the NFL combine.  As an advocate for equality I am glad to hear the reaction that this news isn’t expected to have any impact on his draft position in May. He will be the first openly gay player in the NFL.

Reactions have been mostly favorable but I think it is going to be ever apparent from articles such the the one below that we still have along ways to go in equality, understanding and respect. It has already been an interesting season with the whole Incognito and Martin debacle, and for anyone who read any of those text messages, clearly there is a need for change in the way these players speak to each other.

This could be a HUGE, pivotal year in which the NFL can make a social and political stance that can do a lot of good for change much like David Stern did back in the Magic Johnson era.

Let’s see who steps up and is as big of a man as Michael Sam…

Ryan Clark: What can we say around Micahel Sam?Michael Sam’s announcement last night that he is gay, prior to the NFL Draft is obviously big news, today. Reactions have been interesting, to say the least, mostly positive, though, there have been some that are less than nice. While it may seem ridiculous that an individual’s sexual orientation is still a big deal, it shouldn’t be overly surprising.
