Dear Josh Gordon,
Why do you insist on this insanity? Why?
With regrets,
Your Fantasy Football Fans (and probably Cleveland fans, but they are too sad to even attempt reaching out)
Josh Gordon set the league of fire in 2013 by catching 87 passes for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns. Fantasy football owners from every corner of the globe bragged about landing this MVP player late in the draft due to his two game suspension. We felt like we all won, or we all lost if we played against him.
Here are some of his NFL records, just to rub salt in the wound:
- Most consecutive games, 200+ yards receiving: 2 (11/24/13, 237 yards; 12/01/13, 261 yards)
- Most receiving yards, two-game span: 504 yards (11/24/13, 237 yards; 12/01/13, 261 yards)
- Most receiving yards, three-game span: 665 yards (11/24/13, 237 yards; 12/01/13, 267 yards; 12/08/13, 151 yards)
- Most receiving yards, four-game span: 774 yards (11/17/13, 125 yards; 11/24/13, 237 yards; 12/01/13, 267 yards; 12/08/13, 151 yards)
Sadly, Gordon can’t keep it together when he steps off the field and is facing a season-long suspension due to failing his second drug test, this time for traces of marijuana. There is little chance of the suspension getting reduced to a point where you would feel comfortable drafting him to your fantasy team. The chances of lessening the punishment only became more slim when Gordon was ticketed over Memorial Day weekend for speeding (74 in a 60 mph zone) and a passenger in his Mercedes was issued a citation for possession of marijuana.
But let’s start at the beginning…
When the Browns selected Gordon in the second round of the supplemental draft Albert Breer, from nfl.com, reported that sources from four different NFL clubs claimed that Gordon failed three drug tests in college.
Most famously, during Gordon’s sophomore year in October 2010, he and teammate Willie Jefferson were found asleep at a local Taco Bell. Police found marijuana in Jefferson’s car. Jefferson was kicked off the team due to it being his second violation. Gordon was only suspended.
But then in July 2011, Gordon was suspended indefinitely for failing yet another drug test.
Gordon then transferred to Utah for his final year and allegedly failed yet another drug test.
During Gordon’s rookie year he stayed out of trouble and finished the 2012 season with 50 catches for 805 yards and five touchdowns.
Than in June of 2013 the league announced that Josh Gordon would serve a four game suspension. At the end of the debate, he had to sit out two games and play two games without pay. But at the time of this violation the league was very clear that another bad test would result in a season-long suspension.
Well, skip to now and we have a serious problem.
Tom Withers, sportswriter for the Associated Press, wrote a nice piece about Gordon’s uncertain future in the league. He also emphasized that Josh Gordon continues to show up everyday for Browns OTAs and acts as if he’s the starting wide receiver for the team.
“When he’s in the building, he’s great, and [he] has some issues, for whatever reason due to circumstances, when he’s out of the building. I’m not a stranger to situations like that, and I don’t think the rest of the staff is either.”
Mike Pettine, Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns
We wish Josh Gordon a bright future and we hope he finds the help he needs to continue his career. He’s only 23, so he certainly has time on his side. Maybe he should get with Chris Carter. After a very rocky beginning to his career, and a battle with addiction, Carter got it together and became a hall of famer. Cross your fingers, but you can safely rule him out in 2014.

This week we go over players that we think can make an impact on your fantasy teams next year. It might seem a bit early but OTAs are upon us and some leagues will be doing their draft soon! We break it out by position and we even make time for the lonesome kickers. In this show Ashley goes on her usual Russell Wilson rant, Brandon makes a moral stand that the NFL needs to treat all “distractions” as the same and prioritize what actually is a distraction, and Courtney not only blows her nose into a diaper, but had to tell everyone about it even though neither Brandon nor Ashley saw her do it. That’s honesty, folks!
On an exciting note, this was the first podcast that we recorded live on Google+ and that you can also view on YouTube! Don’t worry we will be keeping the solely audio postings as well but for those who like a little video on the side with their fantasy football analysis, search for Her Fantasy Football either on Google + or YouTube, follow us and enjoy!

This episode runs long but it is full of good stuff. We cover a little NFL news, talk about the new schedule being released, then work our way from the AFC to the NFC talking about each team we covered last year mentioning what we will miss, what we won’t miss, key fantasy players and draft predictions. More importantly we draft the teams that we will each be covering this season. It is a long one but well worth it. So pause if you need to but make sure you listen through till the end for a very spirited rant. Enjoy!

San Francisco 49ers linebacker/defensive end Aldon Smith was arrested and booked on Sunday at the Los Angeles International Airport after he indicated he was in possession of a bomb.
You know… like you do…
Smith posted the $20,000 bail on Sunday night after he was formerly charged with a false bomb report, which could result in up to one year in jail.
According to the LAPD Smith was selected for secondary screening at the airport which led to him being “belligerent and uncooperative with the process and with the TSA agent, making a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb before proceeding towards the gate area.”
If you took one step into an airport in the last 13 years you are aware of the fact that you cannot, under any circumstance, make a comment about a bomb at any airport, ever.
And since this is 2014, THERE’S VIDEO!
I could go on and on about the fact that Aldon Smith has a record of less than fabulous behavior, including his stepping away from the team to check into rehab after an early morning drunk driving incident just last year. Or we could talk about “that house party” in 2012. We could also laugh about the fact that this incident happened at the worst possible time because the 49ers need to decide by May 3 if they want to exercise Smith’s 2015 contract option.
But I won’t. Why? Well, I want to talk about the internet.
You can no longer get away with anything. What you do will be recorded by someone on their smart phone with or without your knowing it. And that video will make the rounds on the internet. The more famous you are, the less anonymous you can be.
Those are the new rules. No one really made the rules, they just happened. If you send a girl a picture of your privates – it’s posted. If you act like an idiot at the airport – it’s posted. If you don’t tip on takeout – it’s posted. Heck, if you DO tip but not enough – it’s posted.
Perhaps it is time to just love the new parameters and not fight their mere existence. If you get caught doing something bad, it is what it is. If you don’t want a video out there, don’t do it.
And do you know what the worst time would be for acting out? The off-season. Why? BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO DISCUSS!
We are a fantasy football website, and yet here I am talking about a non-bomb threat by a rather good defensive player. Do we cover IDP leagues and statistics? No. Do we feel like the loss of Aldon Smith would render the San Francisco Defense undraftable in your fantasy football leagues? Absolutely not. They are a defensive farm in the Bay Area. Draft with ease.
So why? Why discuss this story?
Because we “love the bomb.” As a society we eat these stories up like candy (specifically Cadbury Eggs which are oh, so delicious). Average citizens get a kick out of badly behaved celebrities. We can all sit back in our couch and say, “What an idiot!” And yes, Aldon Smith behaved like an idiot if he really referred to even possibly having a bomb. But is it time to accept that obsessing over the failures of individuals who obtained wild success in a certain areas of life is really a way to bring them back to earth and, in turn, lift ourselves up?
Fame is a funny thing. Hopefully Mr. Smith can stop providing so much fodder and we can all move on to more pressing issues like how QB ratings directly or indirectly reflect fantasy potential. Ha!
by Brandon Marianne Lee | Apr 8, 2014 | Buffalo Bills, More Money More Problems?, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Wide Receivers |
Well, color me surprised! You could see a rather distinct eyebrow raise on my face when I hear that the Buffalo Bills worked out a trade to acquire wide receiver Mike Williams.
Here is the nitty gritty:
- Mike Williams went to Riverside High School in Buffalo. This is actually a seemingly cute homecoming.
- Buffalo Bills head coach, Doug Marrone, was Williams’ coach at Syracuse, another New York state staple.
- About Syracuse… He was suspended for the entire 2008 season because he was caught cheating on a test. And then in November of 2009 Williams quit the team after he and three other teammates were in a car accident coming back from a casino.
- After leaving his alma mater Mike Williams was drafted to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round and he seemed destined for stardom.
- However, in the last year the wide receiver suffered injuries, faced misdemeanor charges after hosting a series of house parties and then was hospitalized after his brother stabbed him in the thigh after what’s only been called “rough housing.”
[blockquote source="Doug Marrone, Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills"]Mike Williams is a competitive, tough wide receiver who has the size and athleticism to add competition to our receiver position group.[/blockquote]
What’s the fantasy football impact?
The likelihood of a Mike Williams resurgence to a no-brainer fantasy starter in not good. He and Stevie Johnson will continue their existence on the fantasy wide receiver cusp. This does further the theory that the Bills are committed to E.J. Manuel and that they want to create the most positive situation possible. Both Williams and Johnson are really better as the number two wide receiver, so… look for Buffalo to take one of the elite wide receivers in the draft this May. The team is quite serious about beefing up their offense (which is great for fantasy players). Now, if we can just decide on Fred Jackson vs. C.J. Spiller… WHO SHOULD WE START?!?!

CBS has changed up the cast for ‘The NFL Today’ by dropping Shannon Sharpe and Dan Marino and adding Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez just retired in December after playing 17 years in the league and is very respected on and off the field.
Marino joined ‘The NFL Today’ back in 2002 and Sharpe in 2004 and were some of my favorite announcers. There is no secret that Sharpe was a passionate man and that Marino knows a lot about a lot.
Sharpe played for 13 years starting with the Denver Broncos, having a short vacation with the Baltimore Ravens, before returning to the Broncos. He was an eight time Pro Bowler and has three Superbowl rings. Sharpe was one of my favorite football players growing up. I can remember watching his last regular season game in Mile High.
Marino is a “cult classic”. After going in the first round in 1983, Marino played for 16 years and in 9 Pro Bowls. He might be the most famous player without a Superbowl ring. The Miami Dolphins have never been the same. He is one of the best in anything he does.
The one thing Gonzalez has going for him that Marino and Sharpe don’t have (in my opinion) is that he is extremely good-looking. I have yet to meet a women that disagrees with me. Watching Gonzalez announcing will do a lot more good for me then watching him score me 5 points on my fantasy football team.
Now that CBS has signed Gonzalez up, it leaves an empty chair. Will they fill the chair or say Gonzalez is just enough man for us to handle? For fun my vote is for Jason Elam, Ronde Barber, Josh Freeman, maybe even Miles Austin. I realize that some of these players still play for the NFL, but if CBS calls, it might be a better option then they will find on the field.
